The play, by P.J. Barry, centers around eight close-knit sisters of Irish descent living in Providence, R.I., from 1934 to 1944. The sisters, who meet every other Friday evening to play bridge, enjoy home-baked goodies, and, of course, gossip about the neighbors and each other. The play opens with the sisters being interviewed and photographed by Robert Foster who is doing a local interest story for The Providence Journal Bulletin about the eight “Donavan Girls.” Filled with song, humor and poignancy, we slowly learn as the play progresses about the inter-relationships of the sisters, their families, and the effects of World War II on their every day lives.
