Directed by Sharon McHugh
The Story: Sam Hendrix (Jeff Repko), a Greenwich Village photographer, has been persuaded by a strange woman he met at the airport known as “Lisa,” to transport a doll across the Canadian border. Unknown to Sam the doll has several grams of heroin sewn inside. When Sam
leaves for another out-of-town photo job, two ex-convicts friends of “Lisa” (Gail Connelly and John Mangiapane) and a sinister con man (David Teubner) appear at his door to retrieve the doll and are greeted by Sam's blind wife Susy (C.J. Cummings). When it's learned that a woman believed to be “Lisa” has been found murdered nearby, the situation becomes more urgent for the three intruders as they try to recover the doll and escape before the police arrive. They try to convince Susy, by pretending to be the sister of a friend of Sam's, a police detective, and a relative of the murdered woman, that Susy's husband is somehow responsible for the murder of “Lisa” and they need the doll to prove his innocence. But, the doll is missing! The suspense builds and builds as they play a cat-and-mouse game with Susy, who with the help of a young girl, Gloria (Shelby Stanton) who lives upstairs, discovers the ruse and prepares to confront the men on her own terms.
This play was made into a movie in the late sixties, and starred Audrey Hepburn in the role of the blind Susy Hendrix. Her performance in the film, which also starred Alan Arkin (Roat), Richard Crenna (Mike Talman), and Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (Sam Hendrix), won her a Best Actress Golden Globe and a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Please note, this production is not recommended for young children and the last scene of the play is in performed in near total darkness.
